Hi, I’m Marcy, the owner of Rawley Retreats. I was first drawn to this property by its remoteness—a place of true peace and relaxation tucked away at the joining of Dry River and Black Run. A solo trip to Rawley Retreats never fails to reconnect me with the restful pace and astounding beauty of nature. No matter the season, Dry River always offers stunning beauty—from freshwater swimming and trout spotting in the summer sun to sitting and watching the autumn leaves wash downstream as winter draws near.
To our guests at Rawley Retreats: Welcome to heaven on earth. I sincerely wish this property becomes a home base for connection with both nature and loved ones, as well as a rejuvenating retreat from everyday challenges, just as it has been for me.
In April 2017, life took a tough turn for me. I felt the pull to get away and stumbled upon Rawley Springs on Google. My sister and I booked a vacation home on the opposite end of Rawley Springs. We had no idea Dry River existed, but we deeply enjoyed walking our dogs and taking in the beauty of the forest.
A few months later, I starting looking for a property to buy within a couple hours from my daughter in Washington D.C. I saw a listing for a cabin by the river and instantly remembered walking by it on my trip to Rawley Springs. I sent my daughter to look at the listing, and she came back with a firm report: “Mom, you have to buy it.” I wasn’t intentionally looking at that neighborhood, but I’m so glad I found it.
The cabin was already operating as a short-term rental when I bought the property, but building a yurt on the remaining plot was another part of the dream. In years past, I had dreamed about moving to Hawaii, building a yurt, and living off the land. That’s where the yurt idea came from. I hired Sustainable Solutions of Virginia to partner with me in building and designing the place, and JP’s Yurt was born.
Being in the hospitality industry, our world seriously shifted when Covid hit. We shut down both the cabin and yurt for a month while we figured out what was going on—until we realized this was the sort of place that needed to stay open. City-dwellers in particular were in need of accessible, remote getaways, so we upped our cleaning measured and welcome guests back for our busiest season ever.
In the summer of 2024, we decided it was time to give the properties a united name and launch our own website. I came up with Rawley Retreats—a name that includes both the location and our wish for our guests, that this property will be a place to rest, retreat, and reconnect with nature.
Enjoyed our third stay at the yurt! Great area for a getaway – very peaceful and rejuvenating. Marcia is an excellent host who goes above and beyond every time. We are looking forward to our next visit!
What a great tucked away paradise! Located between two streams, we could hear the water all night and was so relaxing! Great place to get away but close enough to town to visit the areas. Highly recommend!
What a great space! My daughter and I dubbed it the Fairy Cottage because it felt magical and mystical nestled between the wooded greens and babbling brook. It was out of the way yet convenient to JMU.
We spent a week working remotely at Marcy’s place and exploring the surrounding areas, trails, breweries, and wineries. The location was great, the fireplace was cozy, and the internet was perfect for remote work.
Perfect getaway nestled on Dry River! A short walk to blue hole, which was a hot spot for tons of trout! The Yurt was perfect size, and came with all necessary amenities for a relaxing weekend away. Would most definitely come back!
We had a wonderful stay at the cabin! Loved relaxing at the swimming hole and listening to the creek while having coffee on the porch. The gas fireplace was nice ambiance for movie nights. Couldn’t ask for a better quick getaway!
